As a goddess-born healer, Selah Kilbrid wants nothing to do with the goddess of death and disease, nor any of her human progeny. But when the two people she loves most disappear—her dearest friend Nora Goodwin and her betrothed Lord Henry Fitzalan—Selah has no choice but to leave London in pursuit of Death’s most powerful daughter.

Accompanied by a ragtag group of travelers, Selah follows a treacherous path across the Irish Sea to the long-forgotten prison of a witch who once nearly destroyed Ireland. Selah would face any danger to protect those she loves, but what if it means unleashing a greater evil on the human world? Could she risk the lives of many to save a few, or are some sacrifices too great?

My Take:

As with the previous two books in the Goddess Born series, I was excited and happy for the chance to read and review An Immortal Descent. I think that An Immortal Descent is a fitting follow up to Goddess Born and A Grave Inheritance.

Selah goes on another wild chase trying to keep her friends safe from the insane and dangerous Deri and her associates. As seems to be case fairly often for Selah, not everyone is quite what they seem or claim to be. Once again, I found myself on the edge of my seat and reading as quickly as I could to find out how things would work out. There are many more intriguing and sometimes deceptive characters that Selah must contend with in this latest book.

I found the story line involving Deri, the powerful witch Carmen and the surprising revelations about some well known characters to be fun, suspenseful and exactly the kind of  thing I have come to expect from the Goddess Born series.

I think my favorite new character has to be Ailish. When the reader first encounters her, she seems to be pretty well defined as a certain type of character, but she turns out to be much more complicated and I really enjoyed that story line. In fact, there are several character stories that were really interesting and some were quite surprising.

I found the Goddess Born series to be fun and exciting and I really enjoyed the Irish mythology throughout the series. I particularly liked the additional glimpses at the gods and goddesses in An Immortal Descent. I am afraid that this is the final installment to the series, but it does wrap things up nicely. Having said that, I would love to read more about these characters.

As with the whole series, I can happily and strongly suggest An Immortal Descent to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or mythology.

Selah Kilbrid may descend from the goddess Brigid, but her heart beats - and breaks - the same as any human. Yet enduring the scorn of London's most noble lords and ladies is a small price to pay for a chance at true happiness. Selah would endure much more for love, and her betrothed, Lord Henry Fitzalan, is prepared to challenge anyone foolish enough to stand in their way - even another goddess born.

But when a captivating young gentleman draws Selah into a world shadowed by secrets, she is forced to confront her darkest fears. What if some differences are too great to overcome and a future with Henry is doomed from the start?

With these doubts threatening her impending marriage and the very last of Brigid's fire draining from her soul, a violent attack on an innocent child pushes Selah to the very edge of her power. She must find a way to cross into the Otherworld and regain her strength - or forfeit the streets of London to death and disease.

My Take:
As with the first book, Goddess Born, the description of A Grave Inheritance is a starting point, but it is everything that happens afterwards that really makes the books so much fun, in my opinion.  After a delay and a brief encounter with a menacing character, Selah finally makes it to London, - and then things get really interesting.

I have to admit that I was completely taken by surprise at where this book ended up - but in a good way. There are others who seem to share her gift and Selah is surprised at how quickly they cross her path - being from the Colonies, she hasn't encountered other Goddess-borns like herself. I was really suspicious of some of these people, and was expecting something else entirely. I won't give it away, because it was fun discovering it all with no foreknowledge of what was to come.

I don't think I have ever written a more vague reaction to a book before -- but I hate to say much because it would give too much away. There are some very un-Quaker-like adventures for Selah and her best friend Nora and some nice and not-so-nice interaction with aristocracy and royalty - that's about all I can say without giving away the good stuff.

I think I found the history and world-building of the goddess offspring to be the most entertaining aspect to the book. The villain/villains are pretty great - as in they are horrible, horrible creatures. A Grave Inheritance was every bit as fun to read as Goddess Born and judging from the ending of this book, the next one should be even more fun! My first thought at the ending was "No fair!" because it left me wanting so much more. I am looking forward to seeing where Selah's story goes next.

2013 RWA Golden Heart© Finalist
2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award semifinalist

The power to heal is her divine gift, the fear of discovery, her mortal curse.

Selah Kilbrid is caught between two worlds. A direct descendant of the Celtic goddess Brigid, she is bound by Tuatha Dé law to help those in need. Yet as a human, she must keep her unique abilities hidden or risk being charged for a witch. In 1730 Pennsylvania, the Quaker community of Hopewell has become a haven for religious freedom—and fanaticism—and there are those who would see her hanged if the truth were revealed.

For eighteen years, Selah safely navigates the narrow gap between duty and self-preservation, until the day a prominent minister uncovers her secret. Obsessed with her power, Nathan Crowley disregards her betrothal to a distant cousin from Ireland and demands marriage in exchange for his silence. Selah stalls for time, but when news reaches the Colonies of her cousin’s death, time has run out.

Rather than submit to Nathan, Selah coerces a stranger to pose as her husband. It’s a good plan—her only plan—even though Henry Alan harbors his own dark secrets. But when she returns to Hopewell a married woman, the real fight has just begun. As unseen forces move against her, Selah doesn’t know which poses the greater danger—a malignant shadow closing in from outside or the internal fire that threatens to consume her heart.

Book Two in the Goddess Born series will be published in November 2014 and Book Three in June 2015.

My Take:

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I agreed to review Goddess Born, but the premise interested me enough that I had high hopes. I liked the whole descendant of the goddess Brigid and gift of healing aspect a lot.

I really love books that take place in Colonial America and I was happy that Goddess Born includes details about daily life, the differing religious groups in the area and the herbal knowledge of the times. I really appreciated the attention to detail in the descriptions about the Quaker religious beliefs and services.

I found Selah to be a sympathetic, engaging character and I knew she and Henry would end up together. I did feel that the romance seemed a bit rushed, and I would have liked it to be a bit more drawn out or at least explain a bit more how they fell for each so fast, but overall, the romance between Selah and Henry was satisfyingly sweet.

I was sufficiently appalled and upset by the villains of the novel. I think they were about as despicable as a person could be in this setting. I was quickly drawn into the drama and was anxious to find out who was behind all the accusations against Selah and I was totally surprised by the big reveal.

I think that Goddess Born will appeal to its target audience and I found it engaging and enjoyable. I actually already suggested the book to my daughter, so I think that pretty much says it all.

About the Author

03_Kari EdgrenKari Edgren did not dream of becoming a writer. Instead, she dreamed of everything else and was often made to stay inside during kindergarten recess to practice her letters. Despite doting parents and a decent school system, Ms. Edgren managed to make it through elementary school having completed only one book cover to cover – The Box Car Children, which she read approximately forty-seven times. Things improved during high school, but not until she read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude in college, did she truly understand the power of a book.

Ms. Edgren aspires to be a Vulcan, a world-acclaimed opera singer, and two inches taller. She resides in the Pacific NW where she spends a great deal of time torturing her husband and children with strange food and random historical facts. Ms. Edgren hasn’t stopped dreaming, but has finally mastered her letters enough to put the stories on paper.
