As a goddess-born healer, Selah Kilbrid wants nothing to do with the goddess of death and disease, nor any of her human progeny. But when the two people she loves most disappear—her dearest friend Nora Goodwin and her betrothed Lord Henry Fitzalan—Selah has no choice but to leave London in pursuit of Death’s most powerful daughter.
Accompanied by a ragtag group of travelers, Selah follows a treacherous path across the Irish Sea to the long-forgotten prison of a witch who once nearly destroyed Ireland. Selah would face any danger to protect those she loves, but what if it means unleashing a greater evil on the human world? Could she risk the lives of many to save a few, or are some sacrifices too great?
My Take:
As with the previous two books in the Goddess Born series, I was excited and happy for the chance to read and review An Immortal Descent. I think that An Immortal Descent is a fitting follow up to Goddess Born and A Grave Inheritance.
Selah goes on another wild chase trying to keep her friends safe from the insane and dangerous Deri and her associates. As seems to be case fairly often for Selah, not everyone is quite what they seem or claim to be. Once again, I found myself on the edge of my seat and reading as quickly as I could to find out how things would work out. There are many more intriguing and sometimes deceptive characters that Selah must contend with in this latest book.
I found the story line involving Deri, the powerful witch Carmen and the surprising revelations about some well known characters to be fun, suspenseful and exactly the kind of thing I have come to expect from the Goddess Born series.
I think my favorite new character has to be Ailish. When the reader first encounters her, she seems to be pretty well defined as a certain type of character, but she turns out to be much more complicated and I really enjoyed that story line. In fact, there are several character stories that were really interesting and some were quite surprising.
I found the Goddess Born series to be fun and exciting and I really enjoyed the Irish mythology throughout the series. I particularly liked the additional glimpses at the gods and goddesses in An Immortal Descent. I am afraid that this is the final installment to the series, but it does wrap things up nicely. Having said that, I would love to read more about these characters.
As with the whole series, I can happily and strongly suggest An Immortal Descent to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or mythology.
